Foshan is located in the northern part of the Pearl River, 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. The city is made up of five districts: Chancheng, Shunde, San-shui, Nanhai and Gaoming Districts. The government seat is located in Chancheng District. It is a vital part of an active economic zone comprising of Guangzhou in the east, and Hong Kong and Macau in the south. The transportation system of Fthe city is well designed to facilitate traveling into or out of the city.

 With a long history dating back to approximately 5,000 years, the city gained its name from the three Buddha statues unearthed in this area in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Having a temperate climate with abundant rainfall, it has been a land of fish and rice. Besides fishing and farming, the local craftsmen were also known for their skills in making ceramics. Thriving handicraft industries, commerce, and the arts made Foshan one of the four most famous towns in Tang and Song (960-1279) dynasties. It has a reputation as the home of Chinese ceramic arts, Cantonese operas and martial arts.

Foshan is a modern city. It was one of the earliest ports to engage in foreign trade since China's open door policy. It also has become the third largest city in Guangdong Province, combining its manufacturing industries with tourism. In recent years, Foshan has committed its resources to further expand its vibrant tourism industry.

The top attractions in and a round the city are many. Highlights include Xiqiao Mountain, Foshan Zumiao (Ancestral) Temple, Sanshui Lotus World, Ancient Nanfeng Kiln, Bruce Lee Ancestor's House, Nanhai Kwan-yin Temple and Qinghui Garden.

The Zumiao Commercial Street is a must-go place for shopping. There are big shopping malls and plazas where all kinds of local handicrafts can be found. In addition, there are many famous restaurants that serve fresh, tasty local delicacies. Cafes, pubs and teahouses add varieties for visitors to enjoy.

Foshan Attractions

Foshan is a historical and energetic city. In the past thousands of years, it made its way among the shortlist of the four best known towns in Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties. Famous as the hometown of ceramic art, Cantonese Opera, and martial art, Foshan also shows its modern face as the third largest city in Guangdong Province. Relying on its profound cultural achievements, it has developed into a tourist city supported by its advantaged geographic location and economic conditions.

In City Proper (Chancheng District)
A popular saying goes that one who fails to visit the Ancestor's Temple has never been in Foshan. In contrast to the hustle in the Zumiao Road, the Zumiao Temple, where the present Foshan Museum is seated, tacitly shows the refinement and magnificence of towers, halls, garrets and other ancient architecture. It was a Taoist site first established in the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) and is still home to a thriving culture.

Taking Bus No.109, 120, 137, visitors can get to the Ancient Nanfeng Kiln, where pottery art of Foshan originated. Its history can be traced back five hundred years, to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). And it is amazing that this ancient kiln still works. Visitors can enjoy an ever fascinating experience to make pottery by their own in this fascinating national treasure.

In Nanhai District
Located to the north of Chancheng District, Nanhai District can be reached by Bus No.208B and some others. In this area, the Xiqiao Mountain is reputed as the pearl of landscapes in South Guangdong. Situated in the southwest of the Nanhai District, it is an extinct volcano that has slept for thousands of years. Comprising seventy-two peaks, thirty-six caves, two hundred springs twenty-eight waterfalls, two lakes and nine scenic areas, it is not only a national level tourist destination but also a national forest park. It is well preserved with all types of natural scenery, and it is without doubt a place of exceptional beauty.

Nanhai Kwan-yin Temple is in Nanguo Peach Garden, a tourist fairyland relying on its aloofness to the hustle and bustle of the city. The present Nanhai Kwan-yin Temple in the garden is a must-see spot. It was first built over one thousand years ago and rebuilt in contemporary times in the pseudo-classic style of Ming and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.

Not distant from the temple, Bus No.222, 238, 254, 256 can take visitors to the CCTV Nanhai Movie & TV Town, one of the four Movies & TV bases of China Central Television, comprising three scenic spots and one performing area epitomizing both brilliant past and present of the city.

In Sanshui District
Foshan has Chancheng-Sanshui intercity bus lines which can conveniently take visitors from downtown to Sanshui District. Among the sceneries of this district, the Sanshui Lotus World is highlighted by 300 species of lotuses, Confucian temple and the 108-meter-long (354-feet) reclining Buddha, it also offers some outdoor sports facilities, such as the grass skiing slope and the sports car club. Located in south of Sanshui District, this omnibus scenic area is one of the best value places to admire and relax.

Jiu Dao Gu in Sanshui District must be worth a visit for people who like rafting and exploration. It offers fascinating entertainment and adventures.

In Shunde District
Chancheng-Shunde and Nanhai-Shunde intercity buses make this area very accessible for visitors. Buses take one there by way of a famous garden, Qinghui Garden. It was first constructed by the Number One Scholar of late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and praised to be one of the four major gardens of Guangdong through hundreds years of constant elaborative construction. Comprising crystal waters, verdant trees, stone formations, bridges, pavilions and towers, this garden that unites ancient gardens, architecture, carvings is well worth a visit. In Qinghui Road, Daliang Town, the garden is as a magnet to draw worldwide visitors.

In addition, the Bruce Lee Ancestor's House in Jun'an Town is a lasting reminder of this super Kung Fu star.

Foshan Dining -- Local Food & Restaurants

Reputed as the hometown of delicacies in the Pearl River Delta, Foshan chefs can cook almost everything into gastronomic delicacies, whether it is meat, vegetable or fruit. Influenced by its diversity of local flavours and specialities, Foshan has created a rich variety of dishes and snacks, and has formed its own food culture through hundreds of years of development and innovation. In addition, the locals  people prefer to drink morning tea and evening tea, accompanied with some dim sum, they like to share this extremely happy time with their friends or family members. There are many teahouses and restaurants there offering morning and evening tea, and visiting the teahouses will perfectly show the local food culture.

What to eat

Local Flavor
Manggong (Blind Man) Cake is one of the most famous local specialities that was initially created by a blind man one hundred and sixty years ago, hence its name. It is made of rice flour mixed with sugar, peanuts, sesame, pork, and cooking oil, tasting crisp and appetizing. The most well-known brand is made by the Foshan Heji Biscuits Industry Corporation.

Double-skin Milk (Shuang Pi Nai) is praised as the top grade dessert here. Its raw material is boiled milk with added sugar and fresh albumen. After cooking, it becomes a bowl of milk with two layers of milk icing respectively on the top and the bottom of the container. And the most famous Double-skin Milk is in the Empress, a food shop in Shengping Road, Shunde District.

The recommended eating places to enjoy Wonton Noodle (Yunyun Noodle) are the chain of Yingji Noodle Restaurants. It has nineteen stores in the city proper. Made of elaborately simmered soup, fresh shrimps and wheat flour with eggs, the Wonton Noodle here is spoken highly of by visitors.

Jidi Porridge (Number One Scholar's Porridge) of the Dakeyi food store has sixty years of history. Visitors can find it at No.18, Gongzheng Road, Chancheng District. Characterized by its smoothness and softness, the porridge is one of the most attractive delicacies that should not be missed.

Local Dishes
Goose Palms with Orange Peel is made of goose palms, orange peel and some seasonings. After frying, the goose palm is stewed for five hours. It is a local noted speciality.

Sliced Frogs with Walnuts and Milt is a local dish and has a history of over one hundred years. Mixed with various ingredients, this dish is savory and fragrant and suitable for eating at anytime of year.

Dishes made with Zhuhou ketchup is another speciality. Zhuhou ketchup is made of soybeans and is regarded as the most characteristic ingredient showing the local flavor. It can be used to cook ducks, fish, and chicken.

In addition, Dried Fish of Shiwan in Nanhai District is a traditional dish of Foshan. It is made of minced dace. Stirred with eggs, starch, salt, and water, the minced dace is made into lumps and then fried. Furthermore, the Fried Milk and Daliang Pheasant Roll are also excellent local dishes .

Foshan Shopping

Foshan is a distinguished land of arts. Apart from the local specialities and snacks, such as Manggong Cake, taking back characteristic handicrafts is a wise choice to remind visitors. There are not only several shopping malls that can cater for visitors who wish to shop for brand names, but also some streets and lanes where a fine selection of folk handicrafts can be found.

Shiwan Town, in Chancheng District of Foshan, is praised to be the Southland Pottery metropolis having 5,000 years of history of ceramics. Today, an art gallery has been established here. Visitors can admire the pottery art and simultaneously chose their favorite pottery articles to buy.

First originating in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the New Year woodprints have developed in the city for five hundred years. They use local paint and the main themes are promotion, wealth, happiness, and longevity. They are decorative and perfectly show the local style.

The present Nanhai District is one of the cradles of Yue Embroidery which is among the four famous styles of embroidery in China. Nanhai Embroidery began to be well-known nationwide in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). The embroidery can be seen as the ambassador of the local folk arts.

When to Go
Located in the central-southern region of Guangdong Province, Foshan has a humid, subtropical monsoon climate with temperate weather and high rainfall. Owing to its location at low altitude and adjacent to the South Sea, the average annual temperature is 22.1C (71.8F). Spring and autumn are the golden seasons to visit that place. Every year from March to October, visitors can go rafting at Jiu Dao Gu. Also of interest is the Autumn Color Art, a type of folk art with an autumn harvest theme. A series of activities and ceremonies are held in autumn to celebrate the local autumn scenes.
