 a valuable lesson

珍贵的一课

they say don’t take supposed shortcuts in life for they will only make our lives more difficult. unfortunately, i learned it the hard way.

他们说人生不要走捷径，因為投机取巧只会让我们的生活更加艰难。不幸地，我从惨痛中才学到教训。

i remember vividly it was way past midnight and i had just driven back to my apartment from a party. because the parking lot was too far away and i was too tired to walk, i decided to park my car in the back alley, thinking no parking attendant would ever go there.

我记忆犹新，时间早就过午夜，而我刚从派对开车回到我住的公寓。因為停车场太遥远而我太累不想走，所以我决定把车停在后巷，认為没有停车收费员会到那里看。

i was right. no parking attendant went, but somebody else did – a thief! to my shock, my car was nowhere to be found the next day. i quickly dialed 911, and fortunately the police were able to locate my car for somebody had seen it left on the side of the road. just when i breathed a sigh of relief, however, i was hit with another piece of shocking news – my wheels were gone. since the most valuable part of my car was my exquisite mag wheels, it made sense that the thief had run off with them.

我的想法没错。没有停车收费员去那个地方，但是其他人去了──小偷！让我震惊的是，我的车子隔天就不见了。我迅速拨了911，幸运的是因為有人看到车子被丢在路旁，警方得以找到了我车子的所在位置。然而，就在我大鬆一口气的同时，另外一件惊人的消息立即迎面袭来──我的轮胎不见了。由於我车子最有价值的部分就是制作精良的钢圈，小偷摸走它们也算说得过去。

in the end, i had to buy a new set of wheels for i couldn’t really drive anywhere without them. since then, i’ve always remembered to park my car in a proper place – no matter how far i have to walk or how much i have to pay.

最后，我得买新的一组轮胎，因為没有它们我哪里都去不了。自从那次之后，我就永远会记得要把车停在恰当的位置──不管我得走多远或是得付多少钱。
