“道”字有偏旁"辶",表示路，“首”字就象人的头。“道”字就象一个人走在路上，所以有道路的意思。

(dào zì yǒu piān páng zǒu zhīr, biǎo shì lù, shǒu zì jiù xiàngrén de tóu. dào zì jiù xiàng yì gè rén zǒu zài lù shàng, suǒ yǐyǒu dào lù de yì si. )

The character contains the part, which means path or road. The original character for shou resembles a man’s head. Since the character dao resembles a person walking along a road, it came to mean path or road.
