Popular among seniors in the past, more and more young Chinese now practicing Taichi, aiming to carry forward this traditional martial art. In Yongnian county of north China's Hebei Province, it is common to see seniors practicing Taichi during the early mornings in gardens and small, open spaces along the streets. He Weiyan, a 26-year-old local tour guide, says the county has a long-standing tradition of learning Taichi. "People here love to get up early and practice Taichi. It helps release stress and induces calm, which is also the precondition of practicing Taichi. Young people are now starting to practice this, and some even come here to take classes. There are some Taichi masters practicing here and I always practice with them for free." Not only limited to common residents, schools and colleges are also promoting Taichi. Handan College set up its Taichi Institute in 2011. Zhao Xueli is one of the first students majoring in this martial art. "In middle school, we started practicing Taichi in physical education class. When I saw that Handan College offered a major in Taichi, I chose to study the martial art without hesitation. Since I know little about its theories, I decided to study it systematically during my four years of college." Ma Jibin, president of Handan College, explains how they coach their Taichi-major students. "Taichi is a martial art, but it's also more than just a system for self-defense. Our college not only runs Taichi chuan classes, but also theoretical courses such as The Book of Changes, Tao Te Ching, a classic book of Taoism, along with courses in traditional Chinese medical science and philosophy. As Chinese martial artists are also masters in massage and bone setting, our students must know both Taichi chuan and Chinese traditional culture." Taichi uses softness to resist force. Students are taught to show martial virtue to protect the defenseless, and show mercy to one's opponents. Ma Jibin says the Taichi philosophy also represents the general philosophy of the Chinese people. "It coincides with the traditional Chinese concept of how to treat people and in which manner one should conduct his or herself. We focus on harmony, being a gentleman first and a soldier second, and pro-emption. We can say Taichi stands for Chinese people's concept of the world and social values." Ma Jianhua was a basketball player and coach before knee problems threatened his career. He says after years of Taichi practice, his knees recovered. As he benefited from the practice, now he focuses on promoting Taichi, especially among young people. "We don't emphasize on the techniques. Our main purpose is to change people's lifestyles and attitude towards life. Only when we calm down, can we find, analyze and solve problems correctly. It helps young people with their studies. Thus, we now devote ourselves to promoting Taichi and its culture." To let more people know and practice Taichi, the college has negotiated with delegations from the U.S., Russia, Singapore, Italy, Spain and many other countries on potential cooperation and plans to open Taichi institutes overseas to spread Taichi's benefits. 文本来源:learn chinese in foshan 首选爱德华国际汉语 |
