while no one can deny the success of the smartphone, do we need smart appliances for our homes as well?
lg recently launched fridges, washers and cookers that can ‘chat’ with users via internet (currently available in south korea only) and samsung has already released air conditioners, fridges and washers with smart technology, but are they truly necessary? are there really any advantages to being able to see what’s in your fridge when grocery shopping as opposed to the standard grocery shopping list?
sure, starting a load of laundry before you get home and knowing what foods are about to expire can be helpful, but the manual act of having to load the washing machine yourself and enter the food information so that it can track when it is about to expire seem to create additional work for less ‘play,’ rather than actually save time or make life more efficient. it seems, at this point of development, that such luxury items are “all show and no action,” – meaning they look impressive, but don’t offer much more than remote control (along with inflated egos and price tags, of course.)
if a greater level of automation were achieved, perhaps they would work better. for that to happen, however, manufacturers of goods also need to be updated to include a tagging system for tracking items. additionally, more computer technology opens the door for more specialized repairs and security issues, which could be costly.
