In anticipation of summer, many people in Beijing look forward to outdoor meals with family and friends - skewers of mutton sizzling over barbecue pits and piles of cold marinated peanuts washed down with a beer. But a new ban starting this month on restaurants offering barbecues and serving cold dishes in the open may leave many people disappointed. The Beijing Commission of Commerce says the move(行动) is part of authorities' latest efforts to improve environmental and food hygiene standards(提高环境和食品卫生标准). In addition to improving food safety(食品安全), the ban is aimed at reducing air pollution(减少空气污染) in the capital. Although barbecued food is tasty(美味的), cooking it does produce a bit of pollution. With Beijing grappling to clear its skies of persistent dense smog(持续浓厚的雾霾), it has paid attention on barbecue fumes(烧烤烟) within the city. Under the new regulation, barbecues in the open(露天烧烤) will be banned(被禁止) throughout the city. All outdoor food outlets(小吃摊) should also be equipped with(被加装...设施) water, drainage and power facilities and be at least 25 meters from places like outdoor dumpsites, cesspools and toilets. Businesses that do not obey the rule(遵守规定) could be fined(被罚款) up to 20,000 yuan and may have their equipment confiscated(设备被没收). Residents have mixed opinions(观点不一) on the measure. Someone thinks that barbecue pollutes the environment while some other people are really missing eating barbecue outside as an important part of life in Beijing.
