为了缓解北京的水资源供应紧张局面，一项巨大的海水淡化工程已经在曹妃甸投入前期试点应用，预计在五年后正式投产。届时每天可向北京供应100万吨淡化后的高品质饮用水。

Annual desalted water to Beijing will increase to more than 1 billion cubic meters, equaling the storage capacity of Miyun Reservoir, the largest storage facility in north China and Beijing's major water source.

每年供应北京的淡化海水将达到10亿多立方米，相当于密云水库的储水量。密云水库是华北地区最大的水库，也是北京的主要水源。

“淡化海水”就是desalted water，国家将建设巨大的desalination project（海水淡化工程），以缓解北京的水资源供应紧张局面。

现在北京人均水资源量仅100立方米，仅为United Nations' "danger threshold"（国际警戒线）的十分之一。现在北京对水费也开始实行differential pricing（阶梯计价）。
