life english – encountering an earthquake
fiona is from canada. she has come to taiwan as an exchange student to study chinese. there was an earthquake tonight and fiona was so scared that she ran out onto the street, bumping into a passerby, abby.
fiona: help!
fiona:救命呀!
abby: what’s the matter? is there anything i can help you with?
fiona: there’s…an earthquake!
fiona:有……
abby: is there? i must not have noticed because i was walking. but it shouldn’t be too big, so there’s no need to worry.
fiona: but the vase in my apartment tipped over just now and the place was creaking. it sounded as if it was going to collapse.
abby: earthquakes happen all the time in taiwan. you don’t need to worry too much.
fiona: thanks for the explanation. i feel a bit better now.
abby: you’re welcome. the next time there is an earthquake, remember to open your entrance door and make sure your stove is turned off. if the shaking keeps getting worse, quickly run down the stairs. do not take the lift no matter what.
fiona: i’ve never experienced an earthquake before. this is my first time!
abby: really? i guess there is a first time for everything.
fiona: now i know how scary earthquakes are. all that shaking has made me dizzy.
abby: i’m sure you’ll get used to it after another 6 months in taiwan.
fiona: i hope so. thank you so much!
abby: you’re welcome!
abby:别客气!
