 1、 How much did you have to pay down on the car?

　　误：你（一共）花了多少钱买那辆车？
　　正：买那辆车你首付给了多少现钱？

　　析：down=in cash,在买东西时付出的现金，下面这个例句可帮助理解本题：U pay 5000 dollars down and the remainder in installments. 你先付5000美元现金，其余的分期付款。

　　2、The wind blows south.
　　误：风向南吹。
　　正：风从南边吹来。

　　析：表示方位的词，如东南西北，作副词时，意义为 朝...方向去，如：The river flows north. 河水向北流。但是唯有说道风的时候，恰好相反，指 从...方向来。如：The wind blows east. 刮东风。

　　3、There is no living in the island.
　　误：此岛上没有生物。
　　正：此岛不能住人/居住。
　　析：There is no + v-ing(动名词) =We can't + v(原动词) ＝It's impossible + to v(不定式)

　　英汉翻译俗语谚语中常见错误例析。

　　1、Nobody will be the wiser.
　　误：谁也不会更聪明。
　　正：谁也不懂。

　　析：Wise有三个基本意义1、聪明的 2、饱学的 3、知道的（通常用比较级），此题中是第三个意思。又如：We are none the wiser for his explanation. 听完他的解释，我们还是不怎么明白。

　　2、Don't tell him home truth.
　　误：别告诉他家里的真相。
　　正：别告诉他逆耳的真相。
　　析：home作形容词为 有力的，击中要害的。又如：a home question 击中要害的提问

　　3、This will go a long way in overcoming the difficulty.
　　误：在克服困难上要走很长的路。
　　正：这对突破难关是有用处的。

　　析：go a long way=will be helpfull.又如：go a little way with a person 译为 对那人不起作用。

现如今，由于出国深造的人越来越多，“海龟（归）派”也不像原来那样吃香了。

[误] Nowadays as more and more people study abroad, the overseas students are not so popular as before.

[正] Nowadays as more and more people study abroad, the returnees are not so popular as before .

注：“海龟（归）派”是指那些在国外留学以后又回来的人，是个非常形象的新名词。但overseas student 是指正在国外学习的“留学生”，意思正好相反，所以要换成 returnee。这个词本身就包含在海外学习过的意思。
