[误] He was only too excited to say a word.
[正] He was too excited to say a word.
注:在一般情况下,too...to do 结构具有否定意义.但是,当 all too, but too, only too, quite too 与动词不定式连用时, 就没有否定意义了.例如:They are all too satisfied to take the opinions of others without the pain of thought for themselves.(他们都满足于不费脑筋思考就采纳别人的观点.)I'm only too pleased to help you.(我很高兴帮助你.) They are but too glad to do so.(他们很高兴这样做.)

注:busy-body 是"多嘴多舌,爱管闲事的人"."忙人"应该是 a busy man 或 a busy woman.

注:declare(宣布),是正式负责地公开宣布.如 declare war/peace(宣布战争/和平)等.announce 宣布,有预告的意 思,尤指"宣布(公众有兴趣的或足以满足公众好奇心的事情)".如 announce a discovery/marriage(宣布一项发现/婚 姻).

[误] You may take anyone of these seats.
[正] You may take any one of these seats.
注:anyone 是"任何人"的意思,不是"任何一个",anyone 后面加 of these seats 是不通的.any one 是"任何一个",后面 可用 of 加名词或代词.

注:在问句中,anything 必须合成一个词,此外 anything,nothing 等复合代词被修饰时,形容词应置于其后,而不是其 前.

[误] Alice's handwriting is better than anyone's in her class.
[正] Alice's handwriting is better than anyone else's in her class.
注:在进行差级比较时,由于 Alice 本人也是这个班级的一员,所以不能说"比班级里任何人",只能说"比班级里其他任何人", 这样才符合逻辑.

[误] We were appealed by the picturesque scenery of the mountains.
[正] We were fascinated/charmed by the picturesque scenery of the mountains.

注:appeal 作"引起兴趣,有吸引力"解,是不及物动词,不能用于被动语态结构,且只能以事物作主语.如以人作主语,则应 用 charm 和 fascinate 的被动结构.

[正] He appears very sad.
注:appear 后跟形容词时意指"似乎","显得".通常不用于进行时态,可以用一般现在时表示目前的状况.
500. 不要以貌取人.
[误] Don't judge by appearance.

注:指看得见但可能是假相的外表时,appearance 广泛应用复数形式,区别于一般的,看得见的外表或相貌.
501. 他装成一副老实,无辜的面孔.
[误] He has put on the look of honesty, innocence.
[正] He has put on the appearance of honesty, innocence.
注:appearance(外观,外表),指人或物的可见外貌,有时含有"外表如此,其实不然"的意思.look 指"外表,神情"更着重 神态,气色,表情等具体方面.

[误] He applies himself to study his postgraduate courses.
[正] He applies himself to studying his postgraduate courses.
注:apply oneself to... 表示"集中精力做某事",但其中 to 是介词,后接名词或动名词,不能接不定式.

[正] The highly appreciative audience loudly applauded the performance.
注:尽管 appreciable 和 appreciative 均源于动词 appreciate,但两者意义大相径庭,不可混淆.前者意为"可以估计的, 可以看到的";而后者意为"有欣赏力的,深感赞赏的".

[误] I greatly appreciate you for your kindness.
[正] I greatly appreciate your kindness.
注:这里的 appreciate 意为"感谢",但句型与 thank 不同.后者可接人称代词,但 appreciate 后不可接人称代词,只可接 sb's sth.,也可后接 it,再跟 when 或 if 引导的从句.
505. 她非常感激我的帮助.
[误] She was very appreciative for my help.
[正] She was very appreciative of my help.
注:形容词 appreciative 意为"感激的/感谢的".若要表示"对......表示感激/感谢的",appreciative 后要接介词 of 引导的短 语,不能由 for 代替.
506. 我不能支持一项我从来赞成的政策.
[误] I cannot support a policy which I have never approved.
[正] I cannot support a policy of which I have never approved.
注:approve 用作及物动词表示"批准,通过"的意思.当表示"赞成"的意思时,approve 是不及物动词,所以在带有宾语时, 必须用 approve of.
507. 任何人,只要是人,就会经常犯错误.
[误] Anyone who is human is apt to make mistakes now and then.
[正] Anyone who is human is liable to make mistakes now and then.
注:be apt to 和 be liable to 意思均为"易于......的","有......倾向的".这两个说法有时可以互换,不过 apt to 所指的倾向 可好可坏,而 liable to 多指与主语不利的倾向,更强调本性,脾气和习惯形成的倾向.
508. 五千英镑是一大笔钱.
[误] Five thousand pounds are a lot of money.
[正] Five thousand pounds is a lot of money.
注:当复数名词用来表示一个单独的数量或距离时,便可将其作为单数看待.所以误句中的 are 应为 is.
