注:adorn 的意思是"修饰,装饰,打扮"不能用于文章,作品的"润色"polish 的意思是"擦亮(机器),抛光(器具),使...... 优美,使(语言,文字)洗练,润饰(文章,作品).

432. 天然纤维所做的衣服比之人工料子所做的衣服有很大的优点.
[误] Clothing made of natural fibres has a great advantage on that made of artificial material.
[正] Clothing made of natural fibres has a great advantage over that made of artificial material.
注:have an advantage over sb./sth.(对某人/某物占有优势)是固定词组,其中 over 不能用于其他介词取代. advantage 在这里是可数名词,必要时可用复数"值得注意的是,have the advantage 这一说法须后接 of ,说明 advantage 的内容.另外,take advantage of sb./sth.意为"利用某人/某物",这时 advantage 之前没有冠词.

433. 广告对我们产生微妙的影响.
[误] Advertisement exerts a subtle influence on us.
[正] Advertising exerts a subtle influence on us.
注:advertising 为广告的总称,是不可数名词.作主语时,谓语动词用单数,advertisement 是可数名词,这类名词还有 machinery--machine, baggage--bag, jewelry--jewel, poetry--poem 等.

434. 我不会建议开车去---没有地方停车.
[误] I wouldn't advise you taking the car --there's nowhere to park.
[正] I wouldn't advise taking the car --there's nowhere to park.
注:advise, allow,forbid 和 permit 等动词, 既可后接动名词,也可后接不定式.当后接动名词,动名词前不用表示人的宾 语,若后接不定式,则要用表示人的宾语.总之,要表示"劝某人做某事"这个意思时,常用的结构是 advise sb. to do sth., 不是 advise sb. doing sth.,但可说 advise doing sth..要表示"劝某人不要做某事"时,常用的结构是 advise sb. against sth. 或 advise sb. against doing sth..

435. 我们现在对国际事务感兴趣.
[误] We are interested in world affair now.
[正] We are interested in world affairs now.
注:affair 指与公众有关的"事务"时,须用复数形式,所以误句中的 world affair 须改为 world affairs.另外,current affairs(时事),foreign affairs(外交事务),affairs of state(国是)等,也都用复数形式.在指"(关系到某个人的事) 时,用单数.在指某一事件时,用单数,在 have an affair with sb.(与某人私通)这个固定词组中用单数.

436. 这种新发型使她的外表发生了惊人的变化.
[误] The new hairdo affected a startling change in her appearance.
[正] The new hairdo effected a startling change in her appearance.
注:affect 和 effect 在音,形上是易混词,在含义上是近义词,均可译成"影响".但两个词的用法区别很大.affect 总是做动 词,常表示"影响","感染"等.effect 可以做动词,但做动词时不表示"影响",而表示"产生","实现","促成"等.

437. 他的突然死亡对我们所有的人都有影响.
[误] His sudden death influenced all of us.
[正] His sudden death affected all of us.
注:affect 通常强调对某人或某物产生的具体作用,而 influence 则侧重对人或思想,性格以及作品等产生相对较长远的影 响.


438. 去伦敦的访问使他能与律师决定事务.
[误] The visit to London afforded him to settle his business with the lawyers. [正] The visit to London allowed him to settle his business with the lawyers. 注:虽然 afford 与 chance 或 opportunity 等连用时,含有"使......有机会做......"的意思,但 afford 本身并不表 示"allow"(容许,许可)的意思,所以本句不能用 afford,而要用 allow.再者,afford 不能用于 afford sb. to do sth. (如误句)的结构中,而 allow sb. to do sth.则是常见的.

439. 他一两个星期后来.
[误] He will come after a week or two.
[正] He will come in a week or two.
注:in a week or two 用在表示将来的时态中,意为"一两周后".虽然这个短语含有"过一两周"的意思,但不能用 after 代替 in.此处的 in 是"过若干(时间)"的意思.如:in an hour(过一小时).

440. 我们开了一个快乐的晚会,又喝酒,又跳舞,一直玩到最后尽兴,我们才回家. [误] We had a nice party with drinks and dancing, then, after all, we went home.
[正] We had a nice party with drinks and dancing, and finally, we went home. 注:after all 不是 finally 的意思,它主要有两层词义:一,"毕竟,终究".after all 这一用法,通常置于句末.二,"必须记 住,别忘了".after all 的这一用法,通常置于句首.所以根据误句所要表达的意思来看,不能用 after all,而是要用 finally 来表示"若干时间或动作"之后的"最后(行动).

441. 我们都尊敬系里经验丰富的老教师.
[误] We all respect the experienced aged teachers in our department.
[正] We all respect the experienced old(或 senior)teachers in our department.
注:aged 往往有"年迈力衰"的含意,用作原句的译文不恰当.我们可以说:We should take care of the sick and the aged.我们应当照顾病人和老人.I go home to see my aged parents at weekend. 周末我回家看望年迈的双亲.因为在两 个例句中强调的是"年老体弱".

442. 在晚年,那里的人们过着幸福的生活.
[误] In their old ages, the people there are living a happy life.
[正] In their old age, the people there are living a happy life.
注:age 既是可数名词,也是不可数名词.当作"年龄,年纪"解时,可数不可数都可以.当表示"(做某事的)年龄限制"时,为 不可数,如在 under age(未到规定年龄),over age(超龄),come of age(达到法定年龄)等说法中.在口语中表 示"很久"之意时,通常和复数形式:I haven't seen you for ages.(好久没见到你了.)因此,在 in their old age 中, age 表示的是"人生的某一阶段"的意思,应该是不可数名词,没有复数形式.
