jǐnɡ dǐ zhī wā

A Frog in a Well

yī zhī qīnɡ wā zuò zài jǐnɡ lǐ ，yī zhī xiǎo niǎo fēi lái ，luò zai jǐnɡ yán shànɡ 。

一只青蛙坐在井里，一只小鸟飞来，落在井沿上。

A frog was sitting at the bottom of a well when a bird flew by and stopped on the edge of the well.

qīnɡ wā wèn xiǎo niǎo:“nǐ cónɡ nǎ ér fēi lái ya?”

青蛙问小鸟 :“你从哪儿飞来呀?”

The frog asked:” where are you from?”

xiǎo niǎo huí dá shuō:“wǒ cónɡ yuǎn chù fēi lái 。wǒ zài tiān kōnɡ zhōnɡ fēi le yī

小鸟回答说 :“我从远处飞来。我在天空中飞了一

bǎi duō lǐ ，kǒu kě le ，xià lái zhǎo diǎn shuǐ hē。”

百多里，口渴了，下来找点水喝。”

The bird answered:” I came from a place far away. I have flown fifty kilometers in the sky. Now I’m thirsty, so I want to get some water down here.”

qīnɡ wā shuō:“pénɡ yǒu ，bié shuō dà huà le ！tiān bù ɡuò jǐnɡ kǒu nà me dà ，

青蛙说 :“ 朋友，别说大话了！天不过井口那么大，

hái yònɡ fēi nà me yuǎn ma?”

还用飞那么远吗?”

The frog said:” Pal, stop talking big! The sky is no wider than the mouth of the well. How could you fly that far?”

xiǎo niǎo shuō:“nǐ nònɡ cuò le ，tiān wú biān wú jì ，dà dé hěn nǎ!”

小鸟说 :“你弄错了，天无边无际，大得很哪!”

The bird said:” you are wrong, the sky is boundlessly big.”

qīnɡ wā xiào le ，shuō:“pénɡ yǒu ，wǒ tiān tiān zuò zài jǐnɡ lǐ，yī tái tóu ji

青蛙笑了，说 :“ 朋友，我天天坐在井里，一抬头就

kàn jiàn tiān 。wǒ bù huì nònɡ cuò de。

看见天。我不会弄错的。”

The frog laughed and said:” my friend, I sit here every day. When I look up, I see the sky. I couldn’t be wrong.”

xiǎo niǎo yě xiào le ，shuō:“pénɡ yǒu ，nǐ shì nònɡ cuò le 。bù xiānɡ xìn ，nǐ

小鸟也笑了，说 :“ 朋友，你是弄错了。不相信，你

tiào chū jǐnɡ kǒu lái kàn yī kàn ba。

跳出井口来看一看吧。”

The bird laughed, too and said:” you are wrong, my friend. If you do not believe me, come out of the well and see it yourself.”

zhè ɡè “zuò jǐnɡ ɡuān tiān ”de chénɡ yǔ ɡù shì jiā yù hù xiǎo ，tōnɡ chánɡ yònɡ

这个 “坐井观天 ”的成语故事家喻户晓，通常用

lái bǐ yù mǒu rén de jiàn shí yǒu xiàn ，yǎn ɡuānɡ duǎn qiǎn 。

来比喻某人的见识有限，眼光短浅。

This idiom story called “A frog in a Well” is well known to every household. It is often used to allegorize people who are of limited knowledge and foresight.
