wǒ mén wū de hòu yuán yǒu bàn mǔ kōng dì ，mǔ qīn shuō:“rànɡ tā huānɡ zhe

我们家的后园有半亩空地，母亲说 :“ 让它荒着

ɡuài kě xī de，nǐ mén nà me ài chī huā shēnɡ，jiù kāi pì chū lái zhòng huā shēnɡ ba。”

怪可惜的，你们那么爱吃花生，就开辟出来种花生吧。”

wǒ mén jiě dì jǐ ɡè dōu hěn gāo xìng ，mǎi zhǒnɡ，fān dì，bō zhǒng ，jiāo shuǐ，méi

我们姐弟几个都很高兴，买种，翻地，播种，浇水，没

ɡuò jǐ ɡè yuè ，jū rán shōu huò le 。

过几个月，居然收获了。

Behind our house there lay half a acre of vacant land. Mother said, “It’s a pity to let it lie waste. Since you all like to eat peanuts so much, why not plant some here?” That exhilarated us children and our servant girls as well, and soon we started buying seeds, ploughing the land and watering the plants. We gathered in a good harvest just after a couple of months!

mǔ qīn shuō:“jīn wǎn wǒ mén guò yī ɡè shōu huò jié ，yě qǐnɡ nǐ mén fù qīn lái

母亲说 :“今晚我们过一个收获节，也请你们父亲来

chánɡ chánɡ wǒ mén de xīn huā shēnɡ ，hǎo bù hǎo?”wǒ mén dōu shuō hǎo。mǔ qīn

尝尝我们的新花生，好不好?”我们都说好。母亲

bǎ huā shēnɡzuò chénɡ le hǎo jǐ yànɡshí pǐn ，hái fēn fù jiù zài yuán de yào máo tínɡ

把花生做成了好几样食品，还吩咐就后园的在茅亭

lǐguò zhè ɡè jié。

里过这个节。

Mother said, “How about giving a party this evening to celebrate the harvest and inviting your Daddy to have a taste of our newly-harvested peanuts?” We all agreed. Mother made quite a few varieties of goodies out of the peanuts, and told us that the party would be held in the thatched pavilion on the peanut plot.

wǎn shànɡ de tiān sè bù tai hǎo ，kě shì fù qīn yě lái le，shí zài hěn nán dé 。fù

晚上的天色不太好，可是父亲也来了，实在很难得。父

qīn shuō:“nǐ mén ài chī huā shēnɡ ma?”

亲说 :“你们爱吃花生吗?”

Night sky is not very good, but the father has come, it is hard to come by. Father said"you like peanuts?"

wǒ mén zhēnɡ zhe da ying:“ài!”

我们争着答应:“爱!”

We fought to respound "Yes!"

“shuí nénɡ bǎ huā shēnɡ de hǎo chù shuō chū lái?”

“ 谁能把花生的好处说出来 ?”

"Who can tell the advantages of peanuts?"

jiě jiě shuō:“huā shēnɡ de wèi měi。”

姐姐说 :“花生的味美。”

Sister said" it tastes good."

gē ɡē shuō:“huā shēnɡ kě yǐ zhà yóu。”

哥哥说 :“花生可以榨油。”

Brother said"peanuts can be used in oil extraction."

wǒ shuō:“huā shēng de jià qian pián yi ，shuí dōu kě yǐ mǎi lái chī ；dōu xǐ huān

我说 :“花生的价钱便宜，谁都可以买来吃；都喜欢

chī 。zhè jiù shì tā de hao chu。”

吃。这就是它的好处。”

“Peanuts are so cheap,” said I, “that anyone can afford to eat them. Peanuts are everyone’s favorite. That’s why we call peanuts good.”

fù qīn shuō:“huā shēnɡ de hǎo chǔ hěn duō ， yǒu yī yànɡ zuì kě ɡuì。tā de guǒ

父亲说 :“ 花生的好处很多，有一样最可贵。它的果

shí mái zài dì lǐ ，bù xiànɡ táo zǐ 、shí liú ，pínɡ ɡuǒ nà yàng，bǎ xiān hónɡ nèn lǜ de

实埋在地里，不像桃子、石榴，苹果那样，把鲜红嫩绿的

ɡuǒ shí gāo gāo de guà zài zhī tóu shàng，shǐ rén yī jiàn jiù shēnɡ ài mù zhī xīn。nǐ

果实高高地挂在枝头上，使人一见就生爱慕之心。你

men kàn tā ǎi ǎi dì zhǎng zài dì shàng，děnɡ dào chénɡ shú le，yě bù nénɡ lì kè biàn

们看它矮矮地长在地上，等到成熟了，也不能立刻辨

chū lái tā yǒu méi yǒu ɡuǒ shí ，bì xū wā chū lái cái zhī dào。”

出来它有没有果实，必须挖出来才知道。”

“It’s true that peanuts have many uses,” said Father, “but they’re most beloved in one respect. Unlike nice-looking apples, peaches and pomegranates, which hang their fruit on branches and win people’s instant admiration with their brilliant colours, tiny little peanuts bury themselves underground and remain unearthed until they’re ripe. When you come upon a peanut plant lying curled up on the ground, you can never immediately tell whether or not it bears any nuts until you touch them.”

wǒ mén dōu shuō Shì，mǔ qīn yě diǎn diǎn tóu 。

我们都说是，母亲也点点头。

“That’s true,” we said in unison. Mother also nodded.

fù qīn jiē xià qù shuō:“suǒ yǐ nǐ mén yào xiànɡ huā shēnɡ ，tā suī rán bù hǎo

父亲接下去说 :“所以你们要像花生，它虽然不好

kàn ，kě shì hěn yǒu yònɡ ，bù shì wài biǎo hǎo kàn ér méi yǒu shí yòng de dōng xi。”

看，可是很有用，不是外表好看而没有实用的东西。”

“So you must take after peanuts,” Father continued, “because they’re useful though not great and nice-looking.”

wǒ shuō:“nà me ，rén yào zuò yǒu yònɡ de rén ，bù yào zuò zhī jiǎng tǐ miàn ，ér

我说 :“那么，人要做有用的人，不要做只讲体面，而

duì bié rén méi yǒu hǎo chu de rén le。”

对别人没有好处的人了。”

“Then you mean one should be useful rather than great and nice-looking,” I said.

Fù qīnshuō:“duì。Zhè shì wǒ duì nǐ mén de xī wànɡ。”

父亲说 :“对。这是我对你们的希望。”

“That’s what I expect of you,” Father concluded.

wǒ mén tán dào yè shēn cái sàn ，huā shēnɡ zuò de shí pǐn dōu chī wán le ，fù qīn

我们谈到夜深才散，花生做的食品都吃完了，父亲

de huà què shēn shēn de yìn zài wǒ de xīn shànɡ 。

的话却深深地印在我的心上。

We kept chatting until the party broke up late at night. Today, though nothing is left of the goodies made of peanuts, Father’s words remain engraved in my mind.
