 I would like to talk about Stephen Chow, a comic actor who’s not only popular in China, but also in other Chinese-speaking areas. As Chinese people might know, he’s a talent as an actor, a film director, as well as a producer. Chow was born in 1960s and brought up by a single mother with two siblings in Hong Kong. When he was nine, he watched a film featuring Bruce Lee, and then he was determined to become a martial arts movie star. I’m not a big fan of this person, but I do find his comedies quite different from others. And I think it has something to do with his personal experience. Before he eventually became a leading actor in a movie, he played as supporting actors in more than hundreds of movies, and some of them even didn’t have any lines. So when he was able to create his own comedies, what he tried to do was to tell the audience about stories of a nobody. Some people say that, Chow’s comedies not only make you laugh, but also make you cry, because he’s really good at telling sad stories in a humorous way. One of his best-known movies has to be Kung Fu Hustle, which tells a story of how a gangster became a Kung Fu master to defeat the evil. I watched this movie when I was in primary school, and I can still remember how much I was impressed by his imagination in the movie, which got him several international movie awards in that year. However, there has been gossip and rumor of Chow’s private life. According to people who have worked for him, Chow is actually quite introverted and weird in real life, which is totally different from his image in the movies. And I guess that’s something that makes him even more mysterious.
