But for those who come here to see more than just the Great Wall, to study, to work or just to hang out, China is a lifestyle – a home even. China is one of the most foreign friendly countries in the world and every day new people fall in love with nation and the often antic life it offers.Getting used to life here takes time, and in that time you will realize just how much the country can change you. And it is not just about getting older or more mature either;it is the way that your thoughts about certain things change. The things you thought were wild and weird at the beginning are now the stuff of your every day routine, barely given a moment’s thought. Here are a few of the ways I think China transforms us from mere tourists to fully-fledged laowai.Your first thoughts on China1) “There are aren’t as many people as I thought.” - Coming to China you imagine millions of people crossing the streets, making a tsunami of people every time there is a green light.2) “Since I am in China I have to make as many Chinese friends as possible.” - When in Rome do as the Romans do, eh?3) “I am going to learn Chinese.” - I know its hard, but it is one of the most fascinating languages in the world, and if I will be able to learn Chinese, there is pretty much nothing I can’t do.4) “Communism? I bet China will be just like North Korea.”- I do not want to sound narrow minded, but seriously, when you think about Communism the first thing that pops in my mind is North Korea or the old USSR.5) “Wow the shopping malls are big, so many brands I’ve never heard of, lets try.” - Everything from Zara to Forever 21 is available here, as well as a lot of Chinese brands unknown to the foreigner.6) “We are going where? Wudaokou? Cool, lets check it out.” - Admit it, you once thought Wudaokou and Sanlitun were seriously must-see sights for tourists.7) “Wow, this place is dirty.”- That is probably every normal person’s first thought when going to Wudaokou or the bar street on Sanlitun.8) “All this food outside gross.” - The first time I saw chuar on the street, the owner was literally blowing it with a hair dryer!9) “Silk street is amazing, I liked bargaining so much.” - The Silk market, or Yashow are the first experience of bargaining for many foreigners, whether they bargain in limited Chinese, English, or any other language.10) “I am not eating that unless I know where is it from.” - Don’t worry, your stomach will get used to whatever it is that you are eating here.11) “How am I suppose to cross the road? Why everybody is crossing when its red?” - Different country, different rules. Deal with it.
When you’ve been in China for a while1) “Oh my god, so many people everywhere! where do they even come from?” - It’s rush hour: the metro, buses and taxis are full of people, and so are all the restaurants.2) “Ugh, this smog is killing me, where is the sun?” - This years number one story in the Chinese web is smog, the pollution and its consequences.3) “Shopping mall, are you kidding me? It’s so expensive, let’s go to the Zoo Market.” - The only known fault of the Zoo Market is that you are not able to try the clothes on.4) “I just realized I don’t have any Chinese friends.” - A sad truth for many foreigners.5) “Chinese is impossible to learn!” - Spending a year learning Chinese, and still when somebody speaks Chinese really fast you are like 什么?6) “China is expensive, especially if you go for a drink everyday…”- Going out can be cheap, but when it is your everyday habit…7) “I love street food, even if I don’t know where the meat comes from…” - A beer is just not a beer unless you are eating it with a bit of chuar.8) “Communism? I hate Communism, I can’t get on the Facebook without a VPN.” - Another complaint that never gets old.9) “Oh what is that? Looks tasty.”- Being in China makes you eat practically everything.10) “I ate something strange; my stomach feels weird; I need to drink hot water.” - As the Chinese say, hot water cures everything.11) "Red or green light? Who cares? I will just cross when everybody else does." - Admit it, you do it too, now.Getting used to Chinese food, accepting acting jobs not because you are an actor but just because you are white; teaching English not because you are a teacher but because you can speak English; going out for a drink just because you got used to it, and so much more are just but a few of the ways China might just change you. On that note, let’s drink a beer to this weird and wonderful nation…Has China changed you? Do let us know…文本来源:佛山英语培训学校-爱德华国际英语 |
